How Many People Play, District by District

Karnataka has no district-level esports census. Until one exists, this page publishes a single thing: a transparent estimate of how large the gaming population is in each of the 31 districts, built from public national and state data, with the whole method shown.

Read this first. Everything on this page is an estimate, not a count. It tells you roughly how many people play games in a district. It does not tell you how many compete, how many are registered, how many tournaments have run, or how much prize money has been paid — because the federation has not yet run the registry that would produce those numbers, and publishing invented versions of them would be worse than publishing none. Those figures will appear here, with an audit date, once they exist.

Proposed Structure

Six regional zones

A proposed grouping of the 31 districts for calendar coordination and regional competition. No zone has been constituted — this is the structure the federation intends to build toward, shown here so it can be argued with before it is fixed.

Reading It

Four things this estimate suggests

Stated as suggestions, because that is what an estimate can support.

01

The base is not where the attention is

02

The spread inside one state is very wide

03

Population size and access are different problems

04

Mobile is the format that matters

Proposed · Not Yet Operating

The competition structure we intend to build

None of this is running yet. It is published now so that district organisations, colleges and players can tell us what is wrong with it before it is set.

Stage 1

Taluk Opens

Free-entry qualifiers at taluk level, mobile-first, with a low-specification ladder running alongside so that an entry-level Android device is never a disqualifier. This is the stage that determines whether the rest of the structure means anything.

Proposed
Stage 2

District Championships

One title per district per game, run by a chartered district association against a common ruleset, with results recorded to a central register.

Proposed
Stage 3

Zone Play-offs

Six regional zones consolidating district champions. The first stage at which standardised tournament-specification hardware would be supplied rather than assumed.

Proposed
Stage 4

Karnataka State Championship

A live-audience LAN final, and the selection event for any state representation in each title.

Proposed
Stage 5

National Entry

Nomination of Karnataka representation into the national pathway, under the framework administered by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Proposed
Stage 6

International

Onward to continental and world competition through the recognised international pathway for each title.

Proposed
Tell us what's wrong with it. If you run events in your district, this structure either fits how things actually work locally or it does not. We would rather hear that now than after it is written into a rulebook — districts@kef.org.in.

How this was calculated

In full, so that anyone can reproduce it or reject it.

The four steps

Step 1 · Derived

District population

A 2025 projection of Census 2011 district counts using Karnataka decadal growth rates, with the 2021 Vijayanagara bifurcation applied to the former Ballari district.

Step 2 · Estimate

Penetration coefficient

Anchored to the national benchmark of roughly 520 million Indian gamers against a population of about 1.45 billion — around 36% (FICCI-EY Media & Entertainment Report 2026). That national rate is then adjusted per district using urbanisation and the TRAI Karnataka circle's 63.7% urban / 36.3% rural subscriber split as of March 2025. This step is a judgement call.

Step 3 · Arithmetic

Estimated players

Population multiplied by the district coefficient. Statewide this resolves to roughly 2.48 crore, about 34% of the projected state population — close to the national ratio, which is what you would expect if the method is not badly wrong.

Step 4 · Estimate

Title mix

Five archetypes built from national genre share — battle-royale and shooter genres account for over 40% of Indian in-app game revenue — with a PC weighting applied to districts with dense engineering-college enrolment and established LAN-cafe clusters. Also a judgement call.

What this cannot tell you

  • How many people compete. "Plays games" and "wants to compete under a ruleset" are very different populations. Only a small fraction of the second sits inside the first.
  • Anything below district level. Within-district variation is large. A district figure hides the gap between its headquarters and its remotest taluk, and that gap is often the whole story.
  • Real-money gaming versus esports. National gamer-base figures include real-money gaming users. Esports is a separate activity and some of the base counted here is not addressable by a sports federation at all.
  • Which titles are actually played where. The title mix is derived from national genre economics, not from observed Karnataka play. It is the weakest number on this page.
  • Seasonality. Participation moves with exam calendars, harvest cycles and major game updates. An annual figure flattens all of it.

Corrections wanted

If you hold better information — a college club roll, a cafe network's footfall, a local tournament's entry list — send it to districts@kef.org.in. Corrections are versioned and credited. The data layer is a single file, so replacing it updates every chart, table and map on this site at once.
